RUSHDEN SERVICE STATION

Spiral Renewables Deploys High-Powered EV Charging at Rushden Service Station

Spiral Renewables is enhancing the UK’s EV infrastructure with the installation of 480kW Hyper EV chargers at Rushden Service Station in Northamptonshire. These chargers will be powered by a 1.5MW, 11kV high-voltage (HV) connection, ensuring a reliable and efficient energy supply for all users.

Designed to accommodate the increasing demand for hyper charging, each unit can deliver up to 480kW to a single vehicle or split into two 240kW outputs, using two CCS2 connectors, allowing two vehicles to charge simultaneously at high speeds.

Feasibility Studies and Site Planning

Before deployment, Spiral Renewables conducted comprehensive feasibility studies to assess the site’s layout, operational requirements, grid capacity, and traffic flow. These studies ensured that the charging hub was strategically placed for optimal accessibility, minimal disruption, and maximum efficiency for EV drivers.

Managing a Complex DNO Application Process

A key part of the project involved navigating the complex Distribution Network Operator (DNO) application process to secure the necessary 1.5MW, 11kV grid connection. Spiral Renewables is working closely with the network operator to ensure a smooth, timely, and cost-effective connection, overcoming challenges related to capacity constraints and grid reinforcement requirements.

Accessibility for all Drivers

The new charging hub has been designed with accessibility in mind, ensuring compliance with PAS 1899, the UK’s standard for accessible EV charging. This means that disabled drivers will have dedicated bays, step-free access, and user-friendly interfaces, making the charging process as seamless as possible for everyone.

With this deployment, Spiral Renewables is helping to expand the UK’s hyper charging network, making long-distance EV travel more convenient while ensuring inclusivity for all drivers.

Seamless In-Bay Ordering for Customers

To enhance the customer experience, Spiral Renewables is also developing an in-bay ordering system that allows drivers to order food and drinks from the service station store and the in-store bakery while charging their vehicle. This system will enable users to browse the menu, place orders, and receive notifications when their items are ready, making the most of their charging time without needing to wait inside the store.
